TIFF is a very robust file format that allows files to hold a tremendous amount of data — a TIFF file can contain up to 8 million pixels (96 million bytes). The importance of file formats can be hard to grasp — just because you make a digital file doesn't mean that it's finished. File formats are just a way to describe how to store the information that makes up your image. After a file is created, the information that's contained in the image file format is still sitting there on the hard drive. What you do after the file's created is up to you. You can crop, erase, or add text to a TIFF image; nothing is locked down. Although creating TIFF files is easy, converting an image file to a TIFF format takes a little bit of work. ## Converting to TIFF Many editors, from Photoshop to programs that do simple editing, can create a TIFF file. However, the biggest problem is that if you create a.jpg,.tif, or.bmp file in Photoshop, the.png file format does not. Furthermore, unless you save as a TIFF file, you can't create a.tif file from a.jpg or.bmp file. To convert to a TIFF format, you must open your photo file in Photoshop and then click the Save for Web & Devices button to create a TIFF file (see Figure 15-2).
